Inspecting cell towers is no easy feat; it is time consuming and dangerous for workers to climb the towers to complete the job. Nokia is looking into whether they should continue requiring workers to scale the towers, or if drones could get the job done quicker, without the added risk.
Recent trials show that drones offer a number of advantages over their human counterparts, including covering the manual walk tests quicker as well as significantly lowering any risks, especially in bad weather. The drones also assisted engineers in determining if trees and other obstacles interfered with frequency being used and thus helped them to design the network.
Nokia is not the first to use drones for network maintenance, and they will certainly not be the last. As technology continues to advance, we will surely see drones being utilized more frequently.
